If you are studying in Switzerland for more than three months, health insurance is mandatory and Swiss law requires you to arrange it within 90 days of arrival. Evasan Swiss Studies has been providing exactly that coverage: full KVG/LAMal-equivalent protection, accepted in all Swiss cantons, starting from CHF 66 per month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions before selecting your insurance? Browse the FAQs below or get in touch with us for personalized guidance.

Do I need health insurance as an international student in Switzerland?

Yes. Anyone staying in Switzerland for more than 90 days is required by law to have health insurance. As an international student, you must either enrol in the standard Swiss KVG/LAMal scheme or obtain an exemption by taking out a recognised student insurance plan. The exemption must be applied for within 90 days of arrival, missing this deadline means the cantonal authority will assign you to a standard insurer, which is significantly more expensive.

How do I get an exemption from Swiss compulsory health insurance?

Swiss law allows international students to apply for an exemption from compulsory Swiss health insurance, provided they take out a student insurance plan that offers equivalent coverage. Once you purchase your Swiss Studies plan, we provide the documentation you need to apply for this exemption with your cantonal authority. The process varies slightly by canton but we guide you through every step.

How much does student health insurance cost in Switzerland?

With Evasan Swiss Studies, coverage starts from CHF 66 per month. Your exact premium depends on two factors: the deductible you choose (from CHF 0 to CHF 1,500) and your age. A higher deductible means a lower monthly premium but higher out-of-pocket costs if you need medical care. Standard Swiss KVG health insurance typically costs CHF 350 to 500 per month. Swiss Studies coverage costs a fraction of that.

What does Swiss Studies insurance cover?

Swiss Studies provides coverage equivalent to the Swiss mandatory KVG/LAMal scheme, including: hospital treatment (general ward), visits to doctors and specialists, prescribed medication, emergency dental treatment, maternity, and accident coverage. Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week through our Alarm Center. Coverage is valid throughout Switzerland and includes emergency treatment abroad.

Is Swiss Studies insurance accepted in all Swiss cantons?

Yes. Swiss Studies is recognised by the health authorities in all Swiss cantons. Regardless of whether you study in Zurich, Lausanne, Basel, Geneva, Bern or elsewhere, the exemption process is the same and our insurance is accepted. Evasan has held formal recognition at the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and Business School Lausanne (BSL).

When do I need to arrange my health insurance?

You have 90 days from the date of your arrival in Switzerland to arrange insurance and submit your exemption application. We recommend arranging your Swiss Studies coverage before you arrive or in the first week, it takes less than 10 minutes online and you receive your insurance certificate immediately. Missing the 90-day deadline results in compulsory assignment to a standard Swiss insurer with backdated premiums.

Which deductible should I choose?

Your deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance reimburses the rest. A CHF 0 deductible means full reimbursement from the first franc - this is the most comprehensive option but carries the highest monthly premium. A CHF 1,500 deductible gives you the lowest monthly premium and is suitable if you are generally healthy and unlikely to need frequent medical care. Most students choose somewhere between these two based on their budget.

I am a PhD student - am I eligible?

Yes. Doctoral students at Swiss universities are eligible for Swiss Studies insurance and can apply for the standard KVG exemption. The exemption is granted for periods of three years and can be extended for a further three years, up to a maximum of six years. If your status changes, for example if you take up salaried employment, you will need to switch to standard KVG insurance.
